Harrison Ford’s press conference and responses at Taormina Film Fest

How did you integrate all the characters on the set? Do you all work together with the characters? “We had a very well-written script from which to play our character. I really liked the script, and the relationship between the characters was particularly elaborate. We didn’t rehearse everything, because with the director we collaborated and so we all showed up on the set and started shooting together. We know what it means to make a film and what has to happen in the scene. The script made the relationships between the characters clear from the beginning, it’s a very sophisticated script and very ambitious. There was a fantastic energy on the set, and we were all able to absorb it wonderfully.”.

Indiana Jones has always been an action hero, but in this latest adventure you see him more as an emotionally charged character. What was it like to investigate and portray this aspect of the character? “I don’t know how you can express a character without emotions. You probably see more emotions now, maybe it is the consequence of the fact that this is the last film and it has to represent mainly the relationships between characters. The plot is very beautiful and equally complicated:there is an emotional relationship between the characters and there are many emotions involved. Indiana Jones 42 years ago was a young and active man, now we see a short part that recalls the past, but then we move forward in years and a new story begins.”

After revisiting Ian Solo and Indiana Jones, what other character would you like to play? “I don’t revisit characters, I aim to play characters that are done as well as those done before. With Indiana Jones we have always had the ambition to always give the character new aspects that blend with the story. All five films lead to a good conclusion, an “almost ending,”not an ending that leaves viewers hanging. This is the last time Indiana Jones will be seen, and we have worked with that in mind.”

Many of the characters you have played are heroes. Outside of the character, who is a real hero to you? “I play an archaeologist, not a hero;there is no convincing way to play a hero. We admire people for what they do;it’s the ordinary people who sometimes behave extraordinarily, maybe in unusual circumstances, acting selflessly. This is something that cannot be played or acted out. I always wanted the audience to feel triumphs and fears of the character, I wanted the audience to be part of what the character does. Indiana Jones, with his youthful vigor, has always behaved in a certain way, now, in the twilight of life, he behaves differently, not less heroic, just different.”

If you had the chance to meet a historical figure, who would you choose? “Abraham Lincoln, American president, during the Civil War, who ended the Civil War. Currently he could give advice.”
